Nicole Kidman Finally Speaks Out About That Oscars ‘Seal Clap’

Whilst the biggest scandal of the Oscars this year was no doubt the La La Land and Moonlight mix up, another thing that got everyone talking was Nicole Kidman’s extremely awkward seal-like clap.

The 49-year old actress has finally spoken out about the weird Oscars moment which became a viral sensation on Twitter last month.

Talking to an Australian radio show on Wednesday, March 8, Kidman revealed that her unusual behaviour was all in a bid to protect her expensive diamond ring. She said,

It was really awkward! I was like gosh, I want to clap, I don’t want to not be clapping, which would be worse, right? So therefore I’m clapping but it was really difficult because I had a huge ring on that was not my own so it was absolutely gorgeous and I was terrified of damaging it.

And despite becoming an internet hit, the Lion actress didn’t seem too impressed by how much attention her clapping received, going on to say,

It’s like, is there not more important things to be focused on than the seal clap? They’re putting it on the big screen at Sea World with an ‘urgh, urgh, urgh’ thing – it’s just not fair!

It’s believed the legendary actress – who first rose to fame in 1989 thriller Dead Calm – was wearing 119 carats worth of Harry Winston diamonds at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony in February.

Fuber Radio host Stephen Leng tweeted of the hilarious moment,

Kidman also commented on the huge Oscars blunder when La La Land were announced as the wrong winners of ‘Best Picture’ instead of Moonlight.

It was bizarre. I wasn’t sure what was going on. No one in the audience was. Then there was some shuffling, envelopes — and people rushing onstage. I was like, ‘What is going on?’ I thought someone wasn’t well and then I saw people’s faces dropping.
