Zayn Malik Speaks Out About Overcoming His Eating Disorder
Former One Direction star Zayn Malik has come a long way since he first found fame on The X Factor in 2010, overcoming an eating disorder that he developed at the height of his boyband fame.
Talking to the Sunday Times Style Magazine, the 24-year-old singer opened up about his demons.
He admitted that his personal struggles all contributed to his departure from One Direction in 2015.
Discussing his unhealthy relationship with food, the Bradford born star said,
Every area of my life was so regimented and controlled, it was the one area where I could say, ‘No, I’m not eating that’. Once I got over the control, the eating just came back into place. I came back to the UK and spent some time with my mum and got some TLC, and she cooked me food and I got back in touch, mentally, with a lot of the things I’d lost.
Malik first revealed all about his eating disorder in his autobiography, Zayn, confessing that he would go for up to three days without eating anything.
Even once out of the famous boyband, Zayn’s mental health deteriorated and saw him struggle at the beginning of his solo career; he cancelled his first European show as a solo artist at Capital FM’s Summertime Ball just moments before he was set to go on stage.
He’s overcome many personal issues since then, with the ‘Pillowtalk’ singer admitting he ‘now has no problem with anxiety’, something he began to be a lot more open about.
People saw strength in [him speaking out], and they didn’t seem to expect it from a guy, but they expect it from a female, which to me is crazy. We’re all human.
Zayn is currently a lot more stable and happy, particularly due to his girlfriend of over one year, supermodel Gigi Hadid.
The pair have been living together in his Bel Air pad for the past twelve months, and even though she hasn’t visited his UK hometown yet, she’s met his family several times in London.
Gigi, 21, has previously showed her support on social media for her boyfriend, saying on Twitter,
I’ve seen the battles you go through and the way you fight to get to a place that allows you to get up there for your fans.
Your bravery in those times makes me proud, but your honesty last night proved what you’re all about, being real.
