Lorde Apologies For Insensitive Comments On Autoimmune Disease After Bad Reaction From Fans

Lorde is facing huge backlash following her comments about her friendship with Taylor Swift being like an ‘autoimmune disease’.

The 20-year old told The Guardian how difficult it is to maintain a close friendship with an A-lister like Swift.

But her comparison to the condition that affects 50 million Americans alone hasn’t gone down very well.

The ‘Green Light’ singer explained,

It’s like having a friend with very specific allergies.

She continued,

There are certain places you can’t go together. Certain things you can’t do. There are these different sets of considerations within the friendship. It’s like having a friend with an autoimmune disease.

And while the New Zealander didn’t mean to cause offence with her comments, she’s proved very insensitive.

As a result, one fan tweeted the chart-topping singer asking her how she thinks fellow pop star Selena Gomez – who suffers from lupus disease – would feel about what she said.

Twitter user, Stephanie Marie, shared a link to Buzzfeed‘s take on the story, saying,

I wonder how [Selena Gomez] feels about this. What an incredibly ignorant analogy to make [Lorde].

But the tweet caused Lorde to speak out on the matter and go on to apologise for her inconsiderate words.

She even says she didn’t directly mention Taylor Swift in the interview too.

[I] didn’t mention [Taylor], but regardless, I f—ed up [and] that was really insensitive. I’m sorry.

And other fans echoed the notion that Lorde has been very unsympathetic in her comments.

One wrote,

Not to be ‘that’ person. [Please] don’t [compare a] friend to autoimmune disease – unchosen – yet have [to] suffer with [it].

But most of her followers were happy to see the talented singer had apologised so quickly.

Aww [baby] I love that you apologised… we all have our worst moments.

I love Lorde immensely, but she did f–k up. Don’t be blinded by your fave, ever. Also, she apologised gracefully! Good on ya, Lordie mwah.

While another sufferer of the condition thanked Lorde for her apology and hoped it would make people understand more about the disease.

Thank you from a disabled fan [with] an autoimmune disease. Hope you learn about about ableism and grow from this.

The ‘Royals’ singer, real name Ella, won big at the iHeartRadio MuchMusic Awards in Canada this week.

She grabbed the trophy for International Artist of the Year, with Joe Jonas presenting her with the award.

She beat the likes of Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry to the top spot, so Lorde was understandably overwhelmed at her win.

Thank you, I want to say thank you so much. Canada was one of the first places to go, ‘hey, we like this little weirdo’, so thank you.
