There were a few other actors who were considered for the role of Forrest Gump. One of which was John Travolta, who actually turned the role down. Other actors included Bill Murray and Chevy Chase. It is said that Winston Groom, the author of the novel, envisaged John Goodman as the perfect Gump.

Tom Hanks modelled his accent on the real life accent of Michael Connor Humphreys, the boy who played young Forrest Gump in the movie. Producers were going to have to try and teach Humphreys to speak in the same accent as Hanks, however Hanks suggested it would be easier for him to adjust his accent to sound more like the boy.
