Cameron Diaz, born Cameron Michelle Diaz, is an American actress, producer, and former fashion model. She’s starred in many prominent films such as, 'The Mask', 'There’s Something About Mary', and 'The Sweetest Thing'. She is also well-known for doing the voice over for the character Fiona in the film 'Shrek' as well as its sequels. Diaz is the owner of many awards for her outstanding abilities and was named the highest paid actress over 40 in 2013. In 2015, she was ranked second as the highest-grossing US domestic box office actress.
Diaz was born in San Diego, California, to mother, Billie, and father, Emilio. Her mother worked as an import/export agent while her father had a career at an oil company. The star has one elder sister, Chimene.
Diaz grew up in Long Beach, California and attended Los Cerritos Elementary School followed by Long Beach Polytechnic High School. She shared a classroom with rapper Snoop Dogg at high school.
Diaz hit the spotlight at the age of 16. She worked with a modeling agency Elite Model Management as a fashion model, which allowed her to travel to different parts of the world. During that time, she did shoots for big brands such as Calvin Klein and Levi’s. At the ripe age of 17, she was featured on her first magazine cover for Seventeen. During this time, she also shot a Coca-Cola commercial in Sydney, Australia.
At age 19, Diaz posed topless for an S&M leather lingerie editorial but these images were never officially released. Later, as Diaz’s fame rose, the photographer of the shoot, John Rutter, blackmailed Diaz and asked her for $3.5 million in return for the images. Diaz did not accept the offer but rather, sued the photographer. Two years later however, a video footage of the shoot was leaked on a Russian Website with the title of ‘She’s No Angel’. It was then that Rutter was found guilty of grand theft, forgery, and perjury and was sentenced to three years in prison.
When Diaz was 21, she starred in the film The Mask which boosted her career. At that stage, Diaz had had no professional acting experience, but was recommended by her modeling agency. The film was a huge success and was named one of the top ten highest-grossing films of 1994. It was this film that allowed Diaz to gain copious amounts of media exposure.
After Diaz’s role in The Mask, she spent three years starring in a number of independent films such as, She’s The One and Head Above Water. In 2007, she returned to mainstream media and starred in films such as A Life Less Ordinary and My Best Friend’s Wedding. In 2008, she was cast as the main role in the film, There’s Something About Mary – a film which awarded her a Golden Globe for Best Actress – Musical or Comedy. Diaz was then recognized for her talents in the film adaption of Charlie’s Angels as well as other successful films, such as Vanilla Sky alongside Tom Cruise and Gangs of New York. In 2001, she voiced the character of Fiona in the film Shrek.
In 2005, Diaz worked alongside Toni Collette in the film In Her Shoes which collected an array of positive reviews. Following that, she starred in the film The Holiday with actress Kate Winslet and actors Judd Law and Jack Black. The film was dubbed one of the biggest commercial successes and grossed more than $205 million worldwide.
In 2008, Diaz starred opposite Ashton Kutcher in the film, What Happens in Vegas, which seemed to be a success, however received negative reviews. In 2009, she was seen in the film adaption, My Sister’s Keeper which received mixed reviews.
In 2010, Diaz was ranked as number 60 in Forbes’s Wealthiest 100. It was also in 2010 that she starred alongside Tom Cruise for a second time in the film Knight and Day.
In 2011, she worked with Seth Rogan and Jay Chou in the film The Green Hornet and starred in the film Bad Teacher alongside Justin Timberlake and Jason Segal. It was also in 2011 that Diaz was listed as one of CEOWORLD Magazine’s Top Accomplished Women Entertainers.
In 2012, Diaz was seen in the films What to Expect When You’re Expecting and Gambit – both receiving relatively bad reviews. It was also in 2012 that Diaz voiced Sigmund Freud in the animated comedy film A Liar’s Autobiography. In 2013, Diaz only starred in one film namely The Counselor as she was focused on publishing her health book, which was ranked second on The New York Times Best Seller list, called, The Body Book: Feed, Move, Understand and Love Your Amazing Body.
In 2014, Diaz played a role in the romantic revenge comedy The Other Women with Kate Upton and Leslie Mann. She also starred alongside Jason Segal for a second time in the film Sex Tape.
In June of 2016, Diaz published a second book entitled, The Longevity Book: The Science of Ageing, The Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time.
Diaz is adored by fans worldwide for her stunning acting ability. She has made appearances in mainstream media a handful of times for the things that she strongly believes in.
One such cause, is her stance on pubic hair. Diaz expressed that she loves her pubic hair and encourages women to embrace theirs too. Additionally, she endorsed Al Gore in 2000 for his presidential election as she actively participates in environmental activism. She has also been involved in the nonprofit organization, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), standing as an advocate for military families.
Diaz is also an advocate for Transcendental Meditation and says, “To have that tool now and to be able to go inside to the deepest part of myself and to access that and to recharge my battery internally, within myself, I feel so badass. I really do. I think it’s so awesome. I feel so empowered that I actually possess that.”
Diaz went on to receive substantial media attention when American Media Incorporated posted an article, along with a photo, with the headline, “Cameron Caught Cheating” in 2005. At the time, Diaz was dating Justin Timberlake. The actress sued the company for defamation after which they admitted that the allegations were not true.
Additionally, Diaz made headline news for the leaked video that contained her topless images photographed by John Rutter.
Of late, Diaz has been in the spotlight – being called “brave” – for sporting a no-makeup appearance in public.
Diaz has been in a series of relationships with fellow stars, such as video producer, Carlos de la Torre, actor Matt Dillion, actor/singer, Jared Leto, Justin Timberlake, and New York Yankees baseball player Alex Rodriguez.
On January 5, 2015 however, she married the guitarist, vocalist, songwriter and producer of the band Good Charlotte, Benji Madden, at her home in Beverley Hills, after the pair had been engaged for the short length of 17 days. Diaz was introduced to Madden by her friend and fellow celebrity, Nicole Richie, who is married to Benji’s brother, Joel Madden, the lead singer of Good Charlotte. Diaz’s marriage came as a shock to many, as she had strongly voiced her opinions on marriage saying that it was a “dying institution” that does not “suit our world any longer”.
