Chris Hemsworth is an Australian born actor well-known for his role in iconic TV show 'Home and Away' and the hit film 'Thor'. He has been noted in quite a number of thriller and action films as well as a few comedies and one sports biographical film. He is married with three children, and after living in Los Angeles for several years, he now resides in Byron Bay, Australia.
Hemsworth was born to mother Leonie and father Craig. His mother has a career in education while his father is a counsellor for social services. The actor was born in Melbourne, Australia but spent a considerable amount of time growing up in the Australian Outback in Bulman, Northern Territory. Hemsworth talks about his time there by saying, ‘My earliest memories were on the cattle stations up in the Outback, and then we moved back to Melbourne and then back out there and then back again. Certainly most of my childhood was in Melbourne but probably my most vivid memories were up there in Bulman with crocodiles and buffalo. Very different walks of life.’
Hemsworth has one older brother, Luke, and one younger brother, Liam. All three brothers are particularly close and all pursued a career in acting. During his childhood years, he embraced his passion for surfing and acting. He attended Heathmont Secondary College in Victoria and after graduation returned to the Northern Territory. Later, he moved to Phillip Island. It was then that the actor grabbed roles in the TV shows Guinevere Jones, Neighbours, Marshal Law, Down Under and Home and Away. After three successful seasons of Home and Away, he moved to the US in order to further his career in acting.
Hemsworth’s acting career took off in 2002 when he starred in two episodes of Guinevere Jones – a fantasy TV series. After that, he made an appearance on Neighbours and Marshal Law.
Two years later, he starred in a bigger role for the Australian soap opera Home and Away. Initially, he auditioned for the role of Robbie Hunter but was not given the part. Later, he was accepted to play the role of Kim Hyde. He successfully starred in 171 episodes of Home and Away before leaving the show on July 3, 2007.
Hemsworth took a different direction in his career in 2006 when he was chosen as a contestant for the fifth season of Dancing with the Stars, alongside professional dancer Abbey Ross. Hemsworth completed six successful weeks before being eliminated.
In 2009, Hemsworth was back in the spotlight when he played the role of James T. Kirk’s father, George Kirk, for the film Star Trek. In the same year, he starred in the film A Perfect Getaway – a thriller in which he played the part of Kale.
In 2010, Hemsworth moved to the US and took on the role of Sam in the film Ca$h. Obtaining this role took him a mere six weeks after arrival in the country and the director of the film, Stephan Milburn Anderson, said, ‘Here’s a guy who is young, has the right look, is a very good actor and, let’s face it, he’s beautiful. So I say, we need to get this guy in. I was very impressed‘. In November of 2010, Hemsworth was said to be well on his way to become a Hollywood A-lister.
2011 held great things for Hemsworth. He played the role of superhero Thor in the film entitled Thor. For this role, he had to gain 20 pounds of muscle, and did so successfully. In 2012, Hemsworth landed a spot as one of the six superheroes on the popular film The Avengers. Later that year the film The Cabin in the Woods was released – a film in which Hemsworth starred in 2009 but went unreleased until 2012. Additionally in 2012, he played the role of the huntsman alongside Kirsten Stewart in the film Snow White and the Huntsman. He also starred in the film Red Dawn for the role of Jed Eckert.
In 2013, Hemsworth moved away from the fantasy/thriller genre and starred in a biographical sports film entitled, Rush. He played the part of 1976 Formula 1 World Champion James Hunt. This role was done alongside Daniel Brühl. After this, he rejoined the cast of Thor to create the sequel Thor: The Dark World.
In 2014, Hemsworth was named ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ by People magazine. It was also in 2014 that he made a returning guest appearance on the TV show Home and Away. In 2015, he went back to his thriller roots and starred in the film Blackhat as well as the sequel to the Avengers entitled Avengers: Age of Ultron. He also took on roles in the films Vacation and In The Heart of the Sea. The latter role involved Hemsworth adopting a 500-600 calorie diet in order to lose weight. In 2016, he was seen in the films The Huntsman: Winter’s War and Ghostbusters.
In 2017, the big screen will see the likes of Hemsworth in yet another Thor edition entitled Thor: Ragnarok. 2018 and 2019 will see the release of Avengers: Infinity War and an additional sequel as well as a fourth film of the rebooted Star Trek film series.
Hemsworth’s main reason for being in the public eye is due to his handsome appearance. He is also adored for his great acting abilities, the interesting roles that he takes on, as well as his ability to stay relatively scandal-free (except for the fact that he admitted to having a few nude photos on his phone in early 2017). He has also contributed towards a few good causes such as increasing tourism in Australia and lending his voice to fight against the Dakota Access Pipeline.
Fellow actor and friend Tom Hiddleston describes Hemsworth by saying, ‘Chris Hemsworth is like Christopher Reeve in that he can do two things: he can wear a big red cape without a shred of self-consciousness. But he’s also funny as hell, and he’s so sweet. So with all the fish-out-of-water stuff, he’s so funny. So he does almost two jobs in a way.’
In 2010, Hemsworth began dating Spanish actress Elsa Pataky. The pair met via William Ward, a talented agent who also helped Hemsworth gain prime acting gigs. Hemsworth and Pataky married only three months after announcing their relationship to the public and the couple had their big day on the Christmas weekend in 2010 in Australia.
Two years later, in 2012, they welcomed their first child into the world – a girl named India.
Hemsworth talks about the birth of his first child by saying, ‘Having a baby has made everything else less important, and it’s just wonderful.’ Additionally, he has big plans to introduce India to surfing as soon as possible.
In 2014, Pataky gave birth to two twin boys, Tristan and Sacha. Now, Hemsworth, his wife and three children live happily in Australia.
