He is the second born child to a family of five boys: Dan, Matt, Steve, and Sean. Cena’s paternal grandparents, Felix J. Cena and Catherine A. DiVincenzo, were both of Italian descent. His maternal grandfather was baseball player Tony Lupien. He is a cousin to “Tha Trademarc” Marc Predka.

Cena started schooling at Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, before transferring to Cushing Academy, a private preparatory boarding school at the age of 15. His favorite subjects in school were History and English, and he always struggled with Mathematics. After graduating from Cushing Academy, Cena attended Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts. He had previously applied for 60 colleges, and he got accepted by 58 of them, but he chose Springfield College. In college, John was a NCAA Division III All-American center on the college football team. He graduated from Springfield in 1998 with a degree in exercise physiology and human anatomy, after which he pursued a career in bodybuilding and worked as a driver for a limousine company.

Cena made his debut into wrestling on November 5, 1999. Back then he used to be known as Prototype before joining the WWE. John started training to be a wrestler at Ultimate Pro Wrestling. His first appearance on WWE was during a match against Kurt Angle on June 27, 2002 which he lost. In 2003, he was listed for the King of the Ring before the Tournament was called off by WWE. Between 2005 and 2006, he made headlines with a number of controversies. He had a feud with champion John Bradshaw Layfield, manager Eric Bischoff and fellow wrestler Chris Jericho. He also came to have disagreements with Edge and Umaga at the same time. However, some friendships got formed. He is said to have become friends with Carlito after they won a match with Jeff Hardy against Edge, Randy Orton, and Johnny Nitro.

The year 2007 started pretty well for John Cena as he defeated the Samoan Bulldozer, Umaga – hence becoming the first person ever to do that. The Chain Gang Soldier later teamed up with Shaun Michaels to wrestle RKO tag team, Randy Orton, and Edge. The match ended up with a win for Cena and Michaels. In early August, he succumbed to an injury while wrestling Mr. Kennedy. According to the tests done on him the following day, it emerged that he tore his pectoral muscle completely from the bone while executing a hip toss. Such an injury was so severe that it required seven months to a year rehabilitation for him to be well again. Things turned from bad to worse for Cena as the then WWE CEO Vince McMahon stripped him of the title and ended his reign because of him not being able to perform. Rey Mysterio immediately replaced him. Cena underwent a successive surgery to repair the herniated disk in his neck with Doctor Joseph Maroon on August 25. In October the same year, Cena lost his WWE Championship title due to the injury and surgery done on him. John Cena’s first match since the surgery was on November 23, 2008 where he defeated Chris Jericho at Survivor Series and won his first World Heavyweight Championship. At Summerslam 2014, John Cena lost the WWE World Heavyweight Title when he faced off against Brock Lesnar.

He has emerged to be a fashion lover. During the start and peak of his career, Cena wore attires that attempted to reflect the most current trends and styling within the hip hop culture. He started out wearing “throwback jerseys”, usually knee-high denim shorts with a throwback and cap. He kept the trends until WWE produced specific Cena merchandise which he began wearing. The Champ has also made a few trademarks on clothing with T-Shirt Phrases like “Never Give Up, CeNation” and “Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect”. While he was a member of the SmackDown brand, one of his WWE produced T-shirts bore the suggestive spoonerism “Ruck Fules” whose image was always being censored by WWE whenever it appeared on television reason being “too hot for TV”.

He used to wear a chain with a large padlock and occasionally used it as a weapon until WrestleMania 21. Lately, Cena has dressed in a lot of chromed and diamond studded “Chain Gang” spinner medallion merchandise. When his movie, The Marine was released, John was seen to be adding more military-inspired clothing to his outfit to promote his film. He sported his version of the WWE United States Championship Belt whose front plate had a sparkled red/blue background with “US” in big white letters. The center plate spun round like a turntable.

Shortly after WrestleMania 23, when promotion for The Marine ended, the military attire diminished and got replaced with apparel bearing his new slogan “American Made Muscle” along with denim shorts, not seen since he was a member of the SmackDown. He wore shirts that promoted CeNation and his trademark line “You Can’t See Me”. From late 2011 until WrestleMania XXVIII, Cena again switched to camo shorts (honoring the U.S. Armed Forces), to coincide with his black “Rise above Hate” T-shirt promoting WWE’s “Be a Star” anti-bullying campaign on September 16, 2012. His college jersey number 54, is still used on some of his WWE merchandise.

Cena has granted over 500 wishes for children with life-threatening illnesses through the Make-A-Wish Foundation; the most in Make-A-Wish history. Cena received the Chris Greicius Celebrity Award in 2009. Cena designed a new pink and black T-shirt and cap combo with the phrase “Rise above Cancer” that he wore through October in partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure in honor of breast cancer awareness month. During an interview on Howard Stern Show, he stated that he never was on steroids and joked that he couldn’t stay settled down with one woman.
