Growing up amongst elder brothers in the film industry, it came as no surprise that Liam Hemsworth followed in their footsteps and began acting at an early age. His career commenced in Australia but his move to the US propelled Liam to even more success. The Melbourne native actor is best known for his role as Gale Hawthorne in the blockbuster series 'The Hunger Games'.
Liam Hemsworth was born in Melbourne, Australia. His father, Craig, worked as a local social services counselor while his mother Leonie was a teacher of English. He was raised alongside his two elder brothers, Chris and Luke, both who are actors. Growing up in a family of three boys, Hemsworth enjoyed his childhood having adventures in the wilderness of Bulman.
Although he spent his early years in Melbourne, the family moved to Philip Island when Liam was eight years old. Life at the small beach converted him into a devoted surfer in his teen years. However, he had some interest in acting given the inspiration he received from his elder brothers who were already big names in the film industry. Today, Luke is a notable figure in Australian television while Chris is an A-list Hollywood star.
Hemsworth attended Newhaven High School in Philip Island Australia where he was actively involved in school plays. After his graduation, he was not ready for college, and instead he set his mind into pursuing acting. However, before breaking into the industry, he earned his living by laying floors in his hometown.
Liam kicked off acting at the age of 16, after a series of auditions. His break came in 2007 after he landed guest appearances in two Australian soap operas including Home and Away and McLead’s Daughters.
His first major role was in the TV series Neighbours where his brother Luke had starred in previous episodes. Liam played character Josh Taylor, a paraplegic athlete from 2007 to 2008. Following positive reviews from his performance, Hemsworth landed a major role in the kids’ TV show The Elephant Princess playing character Marcus for a total of 26 episodes.
Before long, Liam started receiving more invites to feature in various films. Some included TV series Satisfaction, the British film Triangle as well as a brief appearance in the film Knowing playing an MIT student.
Sadly, misfortunes followed him as he received a couple of setbacks in his rising career. In 2009 he was hired to act opposite Sylvester Stallone in The Expendables. However, he never saw the fruit of his work since his character was written out from the script,
That same year, he was set to star in the American superhero film, Thor, as the lead actor. The film director invited him to the US to take up some screen tests in readiness for filming. Unfortunately, he eventually lost the role to his elder brother Chris. Although it was a misfortune on his side, the entire experience gave him a chance to move to the United States where he propelled his career even further. However, life in the United States didn’t begin with luxuries. In fact, in the early days, he and his brother couldn’t afford to own an apartment and they therefore stayed in a guest house alongside William Ward, Chris’ manager.
To his relief after a year of frustrations, in 2010 he landed a role in Disney’s drama film The Last Song playing Will Blakelee, the love interest of Ronnie Miller, played by Miley Cyrus. His role received critical acclaim and several awards for his outstanding performance. He earned the male breakout award from Teen Choice, Breakthrough of the Year Award from Young Hollywood, as well as nominations in various categories from Teen Choice Awards. That same year, he also appeared in Miley’s music video for ‘When I Look at You’. During the filming of The Last Song, both Liam and Miley developed interest in each other and started seeing each other off-screen. They appeared together in public as a couple when Liam was hosting the Nickelodeon Australian Kid’s Choice Awards in 2010. The two actually received an award in the ‘Fave Kiss’ category.
Through The Last Song production, several brand managers noticed his prowess and expressed interest to work with him. One such opportunity came after he was invited to a dinner event to promote Foxtel, an Australian pay television company. Before long, Details magazine selected Liam as one of their predictions for the The Next Generation of Hollywood’s Leading Men.
Hemsworth was now settled in the US and bigger screen productions were seeking to hire him. In April 2011, he landed a lead role in the adventure film The Hunger Games playing Gale Hawthorne. The movie was adapted from Suzanne Collins’ best novel seeing novel series The Hunger Games. The film was a huge commercial success earning more than $690 million. Liam’s performance was highly praised and this saw him bag a People’s Choice Award for ‘Best Chemistry’ shared with Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson. He was also nominated by MTV Movie Awards for ‘Best Breakthrough Performance’ and ‘Best Cast’.
Following his blockbuster success in The Hunger Games, Hemsworth nabbed a supporting role in The Expendables 2 after losing his initial feature in the first series of the film. He played Billy Timmons “The Kid”, an ex-military sniper disenchanted after service in Afghanistan.
During the summer of 2013, things got even better for Liam after he was cast as a lead actor in the romantic drama Love and Honor. He portrayed a Vietnam War soldier who returns to the U.S. He then co-starred alongside Emma Roberts in Empire Roberts before being casted in Paranoia with Amber Heard and Harrison Ford.
In the meantime, The Hunger Games had been awakened to more sequels of which Liam reprised his role as Gale Hawthorne in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 1 and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay-Part 2. The three sequels were released in 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively.
So far, The Hunger Games film series is his most successful work. In all the sequels, he was nominated for various awards by Teen Choice Awards and People’s Choice Awards. Additionally, the three films were commercially successful and were ranked number one at the North American box office. The series also ranks second after Harry Potter and this earned the sequels more than $1.4 billion.
In 2014, he was cast as the lead actor in the American thriller film Cut Bank as Dwayne McLaren, Cassandra’s boyfriend. However, the film didn’t do well at the box office as they had expected.
In 2015, he worked with Kate Winslet in The Dressmaker playing Teddy McSwiney, her lover. The Australian revenge comedy drama received mixed reviews but his role was highly praised.
In recent days, Liam has continued to soar high in the film industry as well as landing roles in big budget screen productions. In 2016, he was cast as the lead actor in Independence Day: Resurgence a sequel to the 1996 film Independence Day. His role playing character Jake Morrison, a U.S pilot who grew up in an orphanage after his parents were killed in the 1996 invasion, received positive reviews from critics. He was also nominated by People’s Choice Awards in the ‘Favourite Action Movie Actor’ category. That same year, he played David Kingston in the American western film The Duel.
Liam Hemsworth has managed to remain one of the rare Hollywood stars with little or no controversy accompanying them.
The Australian boy is an avid philanthropist who has devoted his time and energy to a series of charity endeavors. Some of the causes that he supports include children welfare, sanitation, conservation and more.
He is the ambassador of the Australian Childhood Foundation. Although some people have questioned why he should take up such a responsibility if he has no family of his own, Liam has good justification for his role. Liam stated that being brought up by great parents who worked for child protection welfare encouraged him to support and protect children.
In regards to his lifestyle, Hemsworth is a proud vegan whose motivation to not eat any animal products was a personal choice. He actually told Men’s Fitness during an interview that he has no negatives to being a vegan since he feels positive both mentally and physically about his lifestyle. As an appreciation to this lifestyle, he was named PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrity in the year 2016.
Given his upright stature and handsome looks, Liam has, on several occasions, been appointed to endorse different brands. Diesel named him as the face of their exclusive ‘Only The Brave’ fragrance. Considering that he was the first celebrity to endorse the brand, it was important that he did it justice. And sure enough, he did not disappoint.
Coming from a family of actors, Liam was influenced by his elder brothers Luke and Chris to get into the industry. Although they are all bonded by blood, Liam has in the past admitted that there is competition between them. This is clearly evident when Chris took up a role in the film Thor, of which Liam had already auditioned for. The three brothers nonetheless maintain that the competition among them is friendly and it pushes them to soar to greater heights in their career. The three of them have their career handled by ROAR Management which according to them makes the brothers remain united.
Without a doubt, Liam Hemsworth is a charming soul that attracts not only millions of his fans but also fellow female celebrities.
In 2006, although he was still a teenager, it was alleged that he was dating Laura Griffin but the two separated in May 2009. It was reported that The Hunger Games star moving to the United States in 2009 made it hard for them to remain a couple.
Upon settling in the United States and while filming The Last Song he met co-actor Miley Cyrus and a relationship ensued. At the time, Miley was 17 while Liam was 19-years old. The relationship was full of a series of break ups and make ups, but the two announced their engagement in 2012. The couple started living together in an apartment in Los Angeles but that didn’t last long as they called off their engagement in September 2013. The two maintained that though they had parted, both of them had a powerful connection that would glue them as friends forever.
Destiny seemed to be on their side after it was rumored that the two had reconciled and were together again at the end of 2016. This was after being spotted together at various places and the re-appearance of the engagement ring on Miley Cyrus’ finger. To confirm the news, Cyrus told The Ellen Degeneres Show that she was back with Liam and they were once again engaged.
During his break up with Miley Cyrus, Liam seemed to have moved on but his relationships were only short lived. It was alleged that between 2013 and 2015, he dated January Jones, Eliza Gonzales, Nina Doblez and Maika Monroe. However, the Aussie hunk did not confirm these rumors.
