Louis Tomlinson became a celebrity in 2010 when he auditioned for the famous talent search TV show called the X factor. From there his career has grown from strength to strength showcasing his powerful vocals, songwriting skills and even footballing skills. At 27 years old, Tom is a father, an actor, a musician and a part time footballer in England. There is no stopping this handsome star and the only way is up for him.
Louis Troy Austin was born in Doncaster, South Yorkshire in England. He was the first child born to Johannah Poulston and Troy Austin who would later split up when he was still a little boy. His mother got married again and Louis changed his name to Tomlinson to take his step father’s name. His mother died in December 2016 after she was diagnosed with leukaemia.
Louis attended Hall Cross School and was in a form of six students. Before that he had attended Hayfield School. At Hayfield, he failed his A levels and he went back to Hall Cross to start his A levels. In his teenage years, Louis loved working; he held a number of jobs from working in the cinema, a stadium attendant at Doncaster Rovers football stadium and a waiter in hospitality suites. In school he was involved in various artistic programs and appeared in several musical productions.
In school he didn’t strive for academic excellence but he enjoyed art and being with his friends. In one production, he played the role of Danny Zuko and and his performance convinced him to try and audition for the UK version of The X Factor. His parents were very supportive of his musical dreams and they encouraged him to go and audition. Louis and his two siblings had been given extra roles in Fat Friends, a popular TV show in Britain. He started attending acting school in Barnsley and was given a small part in ITV drama film If I Had You. From his days in musical productions, Louis knew what he wanted to do with his life.
In 2009, Louis auditioned for The X Factor but he did not get past the producer’s audition. This setback was not going to stop him and he returned the following year and auditioned for the seventh season of the series. He failed to progress in the boys category but during a bootcamp stage, one of the judges, Nicole Scherzinger, encouraged him to form a group with Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Niall Horan. They formed a five piece boy band because their strengths and weaknesses complimented each other. This meant that they all qualified for the groups category.
Louis and the other band members got together and started working on their vocals and getting to know each other. Styles came up with the name One Direction which was adopted as the band’s official name. At the judge’s houses, they sang an acoustic rendition of the song ‘Torn’ by Natalie Imbruglia. Their performance received positive praise from Simon Cowell and they were his last act in the competition. During the live performances, the group grew in popularity and they attracted the teenage demographic across the UK.
One Direction came in third in the competition. If they had won, they would have released their first single ‘Forever Young’ which was leaked onto the internet. They confirmed that they were signed to Simon Cowell’s label on a two million pound contract. The following two years were great for the band. The band was heavily publicized and using the social media they were propelled to mainstream success. Their first two albums were hits, Up All Night and Take Me Home were released in 2011 and 2012, and topped charts in most countries. They generated hits such as ‘Live While We’re Young’ and ‘What Makes You Beautiful’.
The group has sold over 35 million records and were a hit in the United States, being described as leading the British Invasion. They have won two Brit Awards and two American Awards as well as three MTV Video Music Awards. By mid-2012, their business empire was estimated to be almost $50 million. The same year they were chosen as Top New Artist by Billboard. They even appeared in an episode of iCarly in spring 2012.
In 2015, Louis appeared on The X Factor as a guest judge but he has said that he would be willing to become a permanent judge on the show that made him famous. In 2016, One Direction announced that they were taking a break to pursue individual projects. The break seemed to be coming ever since Zayn Malik left the band to pursue solo projects. Louis created his own label Tripple Strings Ltd, an imprint of his parent label. It was reported by the media that Louis was trying to establish an all-girl group together with Simon Cowell. He held several auditions and he is planning to manage this group during the musical break from One Direction. Louis is also continuing to write songs with Liam Payne his former band mate.
Louis collaborated with American DJ Steve and released the single ‘Just Hold On’ in 2016 December. They performed the single on The X Factor and he dedicated the song to his mother who had just passed away from leukaemia.
Louis loved watching and playing football when he was younger. He played for the local pub team called Three Horseshoes. In 2012 he agreed to play in a charity game in Doncaster, his hometown, to raise money for the Bluebell Wood Charity at Keepmoat Stadium. After the game which he impressed the spectators, he was offered a professional deal by Doncaster Rovers to join the club on non-contract terms. He was signed as a developmental player and he would participate on reserve games and he had to work around his musical commitments with his band. During the 2013-2014 season, he was given the squad number 28. Everyone was excited for his debut and he remarked that he was very excited to play for Doncaster. As a child, he had attended games regularly at the Keepmoat stadium and to be a part of his hometown team was a dream come true.
In September 2013, Doncaster announced that Louis would make his debut for the team. Doncaster’s reserve team was to face Central League fixture against Scunthorpe United. The fixture attracted a lot of fans and the Doncaster team set up a special ticket line despite the match being a reserve match. Before the match, Louis played in a charity game for celtic and he was injured by Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor who received abuse on social media from One Direction fans for injuring Louis. Due to the injury he sustained, Louis was unable to make the team for the match against Scunthorpe. He pulled out of the team and promised his fans that he would be in action soon.
His debut for Doncaster reserve team came against Rotherham United in a central league match. Louis came in as a 65th substitute and the game ended in a scoreless draw. The match was also a charity match to support Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice in the match which was attended by more than 4000 people. Louis would later attend a charity match organized by his band mate Niall Horan at the King Power stadium.
In 2014, Louis hinted that he had gone into a partnership with Doncaster chairman John Ryan to take over as owners of Doncaser Rovers. The takeover however fell through although Louis is still involved in the club. Louis still harbours dreams about owning a football club.
Louis took part in the Mastetrio charity match after he was recruited by former England defender Rio Ferdinand. He was in Rio’s team against Paul McStays Maestros in a match that drew more than 25,000 people. The proceeds were donated to several charities including UNICEF, War Child, Rio Ferdinand Foundation and Celtic Foundation.
Louis Tomlinson is known for his philanthropic efforts. He has put a lot of effort into charities and participating at charity events. The band One Direction always donated to charities and Louis went the extra mile to donate to charities outside the band. Together with his band mate Payne, he co-hosted a charity ball for Believe in Magic, which is an organization that supports children who are terminally ill. During the ball, he and Payne ended up having a bidding war which resulted with Louis winning the bid and donating 10,000 pounds to have Payne’s face painted. He also donated two million pounds to the Believe in Magic foundation. With Payne they donated over 5 million pounds to the organization.
Louis is one of the patrons for Bluebell Wood Children Hospice. He has been involved in the charity organization affairs for years. On social media he actively spreads awareness to his followers about the charity organizations he is involved in. On his 23rd birthday, he established a drive to support Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and set the bar high for the donations they were targeting. He supported Niamh Next Step charity by turning to his social media followers and asking them to support the organization. The charity gained more followers on social media and he succeeded in spreading more awareness to the cause.
Louis plans to dedicate more time to charity now the band are on a break. He joined the 2016 soccer aid line up which is a biennial fundraiser for UNICEF. He played for the England team together with Olly Murs, Robbie Williams Paddy McGuinness, Jack Whitehall, John Bishop among others. His band mate Niall Horan was on the opposite team.
After Louis’s parents split up when he was a toddler he never had a normal relationship wih his biological father. He has four sisters from his mother’s second marriage and is very close to his step father Mark Tomlinson. His siblings are Charlotte, Felicity and identical twins Daisy and Phoebe. The twins had roles as babies in Fat Friends with Louis. Mark and Johanah divorced when Louis was competing in The X Factor. He also has a half-brother from his father’s second marriage. In 2014, his mother had twins with her fiancé Dean Deakin. He gave birth to twins Ernest and Doris in 2014. Poulston and Deakin got married in 2014 and she died on December 7 2016 after a one year battle with leukaemia. She was 43 years old.
In 2015, the media reported that Louis was expecting a baby with Briana Jungwirth who lived in Los Angeles. He confirmed the rumors on Good Morning America. They had a son named Freddie Reign who was born on January 21, 2016. He has said that he enjoys being a father and is looking forward to having other children in the future. From December 2015 to January 2017, Louise dated actress Danielle Campbell.
Growing up, Louis looked up to Robbie Williams. In an interview with Now magazine he said; ‘I’ve always loved Robbie. He’s just so cheeky, he can get away with anything. His performances are unbelievable.’ Louis also looks up to British singer Ed Sheeran who he describes as a ‘genius’.
