Known for her role as a hot vampire torn between two brothers, Nina Dobrev is considered one of the sexiest women in the world. Nikolina Konstantinova Dobreva was born in Sofia Bulgaria. Her mother Michaela Dobreva is an artist and her father Konstatin Dobrev is a computer scientist. She is not an only child, Nina has an older brother Aleksader Dobrev. At the age of nine, Nina and her family moved to Canada where she lived in Ontario until 2009 when she decided to move to California to chase her acting career. At a young age, Nina had developed an interest in performance and visual arts. In school, Nina learnt that she could do anything because she was all rounded. She could play sports, she could do gymnastics and she was good in the academic department too.
Nina enrolled at Vradenburg Junior Public School and later attended J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School where she started pursuing arts such a ballet and jazz while competing in rhythmic gymnastics. She was able to even compete in the Senior World Championships in Copenhagen and Junior World Championships in Czech. She further pursued her love of art at Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough and Ryerson University where she attended arts programme while majoring in sociology. As she was studying in college, Nina started auditioning for commercials and modelling part time. She appeared in a few adverts; like the ‘Got Milk?’ advert with her mother Mikaela; a campaign that showed how close the pair were. She was also in a Lux TV commercial. Commercials led to acting and she made the decision to quit school and chase her dream as an actress.
As a child, Nina was always athletic, she loved sports and apart from her gymnastics, Nina played games such as soccer, basketball and swimming. This would later help her in acting career because she rarely needs to use a stunt double. She has commented that she was often used by her older brother as a training dummy when he used to train for martial arts. Nina’s interest in modelling can be traced to her cousin Jeny Nikolova who is a renowned model in Canada.
Nina started off as a part time model. Modelling led her to audition for commercials and commercials led to acting. Her first role was in Sarah Polley’s drama Away from Her She acted as a teenage in the feature film. She acted in two more feature films before she found her break out role in the television series Degrassi: The next generation. For three seasons, Nina Dobrev graced the television screens as a cheerleader and also as a teenage single parent in her character as Mia Jones. During this time, Nina explored her talent by moonlighting in various films such as the tragic World War II drama film; the poet. She starred in the MTV musical comedy” The American Mall in 2008. Holly wood was taking notice of her rise to the top and she was becoming one of the most hardworking actresses. It was her casting as Elena Gilbert that announced her arrival in the big stage. The Vampire diaries was her first audition for a pilot, the role was not even hers to begin with. The directors of the show wanted the role to go to Ashley Tisdale who turned them down. They decided to give the role Ashlee Simpson but they took a look at Nina’s audition and decided she was the one.
Nina appeared on the show and its spin off; the originals for six seasons as Elena Gilbert and her various doppelgangers; the most prominent being Katherine Pierce. During her time there, she slowly started to transition her career back to film. She acted as Anna in the erotic thriller Chloe in 2009. She joined the cast of the 2011 thriller film The Roommate. She was cast in the critically acclaimed Indie film, The Perks of being a wild flower. She also starred alongside Damon Wayans Jr and Jake Johnson in the comedy film Lets be Cops in 2014.
In 2015, Nina announced that she would leave vampire diaries to pursue her film career after six seasons. She said that she had always envisioned that her time at the show would span six years and it was time for her to move on. Elena returned to the show in the series finale episode reprising her role as Elena Gilbert. She also starred in the acclaimed horror comedy film the final girls in 2015. She starred opposite Maisie Williams in the film arrivals as a flight attendant. In that same year she starred alongside Christina Applegate and Domhnail Gleeson in the romantic comedy film Crash Pad.
In 2016 she announced that she had joined the casts of the film XXX: Return of Xander Cage alongside Vin Diesel and Samuel L Jackson. Immediately after quitting Vampire Diaries, Nina said that her intention was to take a break and a step back before focusing on her career again. During her time on the show, she had won the Teen’s choice award for Female Break out star for her character in the series. She also won the people’s choice awards for best cast together with her costars Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley. She won various other awards and she was the first person to ever win the Teens choice award without being in the ballot box. Due to popular demand, she had to be the one taking the covetous award, which only goes to prove how great an actress she is. Nina’s brand has continued to increase over the years. Her career in television has made her a household name and she is slowly emerging as one of the most competent and bankable actresses in Hollywood. She is 28 Years old which means she has plenty of future to look forward to and it wouldn’t be surprising to see her spearheading several blockbuster movies in the future. Arguably, Nina needs just needs that one role on film that will make her the go to talent and just like her talent got her the Elena Gilbert role she is confident she will get that role of a lifetime.
Nina has tried to steer away from controversies in Hollywood. She is a firm non-believer of any publicity is good publicity. She is faun and likes to engage with her fans and she does not shy away from signing autographs and taking pictures with them. Nina is outgoing; after she announced that she was quitting The Vampire diaries, she took a cross-country tour with her friends. For a decade, Nina has learnt what to do and what not to do to maintain a positive public image. She has said that she identifies herself as a Bulgarian even though she loves Canada.
Nina has a great heart and she likes helping people where she can. After the series finale of Degrassi, she went to Kenya with her co-stars to build a school for the non-profit organization Free the children. She is passionate about charity and she has become one of the most outspoken activists against hunger. She teamed up with Me to We to design hunger Bites T-shirts where the proceeds go to charity giving everyone a chance to fight hunger. Nina endorses same sex marriages saying that in the 21st century everyone should have the right to love whoever they please.
She has never spoken of her religion but she did tweet about her ‘Name day’ which is an eastern orthodox tradition. Nina is a Canadian liberal and steers clear of United States politics. During the 2016 US election, Nina supported the defeated democrat candidate Hillary Clinton by reposting her accomplishments on her Instagram account. Nina was a big supporter of Obamacare and she even went topless on her social media account to encourage people to get covered by holding up the get covered plank. Unlike most celebrities Nina is not outspoken about politics but her opinions can be taken from her social media accounts.
Nina dated her Degrassi co-star Daniel Clark briefly. There were no reasons as to why they broke up. When she joined the vampire diaries, she started dating her co-star Ian Somerhalder driving their fans wild. They dated for three years and then broke up. They still remained as friends and they were able to work together until she left the show. She went through the break up gracefully and even went on to congratulate her ex and costar on his wedding. She denied reports citing that her break up with Ian was the reason why she was leaving the show saying that tabloids were inventing drama because she was working on a teen’s drama show.
Nina is multilingual and can speak French, Bulgarian and English fluently. She loves snowboarding and skin dipping, and swimming of course. Nina loves her birth country and usually goes back there to visit her family and friends on holidays. No wonder she is so loved in her home country. She is celebrated in Bulgaria for her success in Hollywood and she has never shied away from identifying herself as a Bulgarian. I guess she never really forgot her roots no matter how far up the tree she climbed.
